Can TeaLightBox.com make a custom tea light box out of metal? Absolutely… but there are considerations to keep in mind.
CNCROi.com is the parent company of TeaLightBox.com, it’s the custom fabrication shop that basically makes what others don’t want to touch custom to spec for customers around the world and where all these photographs and films are made as well.
There are a lot of technology that can go into making a custom TeaLightBox.com and one of them is water jet, it’s great for lower volume projects where a laser wouldn’t be cost-effective on a per unit volume until many more units were added on.
I often get inquiries regarding metal but many people don’t realize just how different production is with metal over other substances we work with here at CNCROi.com (and by extension TeaLightBox.com).
There is a reason why I decided to make all of our custom tea light boxes out of 1/8″ (3 mm) MDF over just about anything else we have access to and can work with in the shop.
The biggest factor was cost, I wanted to make the offerings at TeaLightBox.com AFFORDABLE and an impulse buy, going with metal, acrylic, glass or anything else would right away increase the budget substantially.
A full sheet of 1/8″ (3 mm) MDF costs about 20 dollars at most, that’s why when ever you see “affordable” furniture it’s made out of this stuff instead of solid wood, with a thin veneer or Formica.
The second factor that I had in mind was weight, we are shipping these custom Tea Light Boxes around North America (mostly) and as such, flat rate shipping needs to be as cost-effective as the product we are shipping, and MDF weighs almost nothing!
Third, assembly is very important but if you don’t have access to a welder or other specialized tools, getting a wonderful custom Tea Light Box from TeaLightBox.com can become something impossible to put together and use, MDF is incredibly easy to work with, just some regular glue and elastic bands and you are DONE!
Forth, I wanted these custom tea light boxes to be incredibly easy to personalize at your end, grab a can of spray paint and you can literally transform your custom tea light box to look like any substance known to man (or woman).
You want your MDF custom tea light box to look like metal? No problem, spray it!
You want your custom TeaLightBox.com to look like marble? No problem, spray it!
You want your custom tea light boxes to look like acrylic? No problem, spray it!
You want your custom tea light box to look like granite? No problem… you got it… spray it!
That’s the power of MDF because just about any paint works great with it, including sparkly metal!
Running a custom fabrication shop is great fun, but you soon realize the limits and benefits of each material, MDF is by no means the most optimal material out there but for TeaLightBox.com‘s uses, it’s as perfect as perfect can be!
We use our wide format industrial Austrian CNC laser to cut out any design you want across four panels, with two additional panels needed to hold everything together, MDF dries very fast when glue is applied to it and the bond is wonderful.
That doesn’t mean you can throw these custom TeaLightBox.com from an airplane and expect it to be undamaged when it hits the ground, it means that for the application of a custom tea light box that will rarely be touched and never thrown around, it has a PERFECT strength to cost ratio.
If you notice, the process is always the same in the creation process of a custom TeaLightBox.com!
Assembling a custom tea light box is easy, again, just one elastic band and some glue, it’s seriously that easy and straight forward, no custom clamps, no heavy books or anything else, just one elastic band and glue!!!
After the glue has dried, just take the elastic band off and voila, a custom tea light box ready to be left as/is OR you can spray it with any of the thousands of spray paints out there.
CNCROi.com has a paint booth, so for us, painting is pretty straight forward but if you don’t have access to one, no problem, just put your custom TeaLightBox.com on a piece of paper in your backyard, and spray away.
Don’t worry about doing a perfect job, I’m certainly not the reincarnation of Picasso and I can do a pretty decent job using spray paint, and when a LED tea light goes inside, nobody can tell the difference between a PERFECT paint job and an “OK” paint job.
That’s why the char marks make no difference, just do it in layers, spray, wait a few hours for it to dry, and if you still see the dark marks that you don’t like, spray it again… and repeat until you have the coverage you want on your custom TeaLightBox.com!
Sometimes on the first try of painting your TeaLightBox.com, the coverage is perfect, other times it take a few shots of spray paint to achieve the desired coverage… there is no right or wrong way to do it!
Whether you want a flat matte shiny look or metal looking TeaLightBox.com, it’s totally up to you and what you find at the local hardware store.
Voila, custom tea light boxes made to look like metal and to be honest, they really do look like metal to the untrained eye or at a distance, very proud of how wonderful these custom tea light boxes came out!
The reflection looks great too, if I wanted them to look more like solid metal, then I’d just give it another spray but in this case, this is totally fine!
The reflection of the TeaLightBox.com with the metal paint is amazing, really like the shine and the look of it all.
Dim the lights in the CNCROi.com shop and you can see how amazing these look!
Just really love this metal spray paint, it makes these TeaLightBox.com‘s shine!
